Nylon is the most popular carpet fiber. It's resilient and able to retain its original look years after installation. Factory treatments make fibers stain-resistant so spills and pet accidents are easier to clean up. Triexta is a newer fiber that is giving nylon a run for its money. Triexta is also a strong and durable fiber, and it is inherently stain-resistant. Wool is just as durable as these two synthetic fibers but more costly. Nylon is installed most often in living rooms and other high traffic areas while wool is often found in master bedrooms and other low traffic areas. Additional fibers are available. These include acrylic, which mimics the look and feel of wool, and olefin, a water-resistant material that is ideal for basements.

Pile refers to the density of fibers as well as their thickness. Usually, carpet with a shorter pile will last a little longer than carpet with a longer pile. Carpeting is woven in loops, and these loops can be cut to create different styles of flooring. Loop pile carpet tends to hold up better cut pile carpet, which has a softer and denser feel. Look for the TPI when comparing cut pile samples. The turns per inch number tell you how many times the strands of fiber are twisted together. 6 TPI indicates a good quality carpet.
